The key to resisting temptation is not necessarily what you do at the moment you are tempted, but rather, what you do before that temptation ever appears. There are some things as followers of Jesus that we are supposed to be doing in order to equip ourselves and prepare ourselves to resist the temptation that we know is going to come our way. One of those things is reading and memorizing Scripture. Psalm 119 verse 11 says, “Your Word I have treasured in my heart. Why? That I may not sin against You. What's the psalmist saying? He's saying, I have hidden Your Word in my heart. I have learned it. I have memorized it. For this purpose. So that when temptation comes I will have a protection in my heart that will help me to resist the temptation. All three times Jesus is tempted by Satan He responds by quoting the Word of God. The truth of the matter is this, if you are not learning the Bible, if you are not even trying to memorize scripture because you think you're too old, you have lowered your guard and you have become susceptible. The key to resisting temptation is not what happens at the moment of temptation. It's what you do prior to that temptation ever taking place.
