As a pastor, I have had many opportunities to stand next to a hospital bed, an emergency room gurney, or a freshly dug grave and try to bring comfort to a person or family who has lost someone very dear to them. It’s never easy, but it is always rewarding to share in someone’s grief. However, the day of the funeral comes and goes and before you know it days become weeks and weeks become months and months become years. The pain, loss and sorrow may tend to get easier as time marches on, but it never completely goes away. As I often tell people, “You never get over it but you do, with God’s help, get through it.” Some say you need to take it one day at a time. I think it’s more detailed than that. I think there are times that you have to take it one hour at a time.
Let me encourage you to ask God to lay on your heart today the name of someone you know who has lost a loved one. Maybe the death happened many months or even years ago. Yet, even today they could still use your touch, your prayers and your encouragement! After all, you never get over it. But with God’s help you do get through it.
